How to show up in AI answers: a 2026 guide for businesses
How does a business show up in AI answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google?
To show up in AI answers, let the AI search crawlers in, publish clear pages that answer real questions in the first lines, state facts you can prove with sources, keep your business details consistent everywhere, and get cited by credible third parties. Google says AI Overviews need no special markup beyond normal SEO.

The crawlers that matter
Your robots.txt decides who gets in. Each company runs separate bots for training, search and user requests.
| Bot | Company | What it does | If you block it |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Powers ChatGPT search | Your site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Collects content that may be used to train models | Your content is kept out of training |
| ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Visits pages when a user asks ChatGPT to | User-initiated, so robots.txt rules may not apply |
| Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Indexes content to improve Claude's search results | Can reduce your visibility in Claude's search answers |
| ClaudeBot | Anthropic | Collects content that may be used for training | Future content is excluded from training |
| Claude-User | Anthropic | Fetches pages when a user asks Claude a question | Claude cannot retrieve your page for that user |
| Googlebot | Normal Search indexing, which also feeds AI Overviews and AI Mode | You disappear from Search as well |
Google's AI features run on normal Search indexing. You control them with the usual tools: noindex, nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet.
The checklist
Technical
- Pages are indexable and eligible for snippets
- robots.txt allows the search crawlers you want to be found by
- One canonical address per page, pointing at your real domain
- A sitemap that lists every page you want found
- Pages load fast and work without heavy scripts
Content
- Each page answers one real question
- The answer sits in the first 40 to 60 words, in plain language
- Headings phrased the way people ask
- Tables and checklists for anything with more than three parts
- Facts stated precisely, dated and sourced
- A named author with real credentials
Your business as an entity
- The same name, address and description everywhere: your site, Companies House, LinkedIn, directories
- Structured data about your organisation that matches what is visible on the page
- Links from your site to your official profiles
Beyond your site
- Earned mentions in credible publications
- Listings in the directories your sector uses
- Speaking, research or data that others will cite
Two changes worth knowing
FAQ rich results. Google says FAQ rich results no longer appear in Search from 7 May 2026, apart from well-known, authoritative government and health sites. Keep FAQs where they help readers; do not add them for the snippet.
llms.txt. A proposal first published by Jeremy Howard in September 2024: a markdown file at your site root that summarises the site for AI tools. It has no official standing, and Google says you do not need it. Publish one if it is easy, but fix the basics first.
How to measure it
- Write ten questions your buyers ask. Ask them in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google every month
- Log whether you are cited, and who is cited instead
- Watch Search Console for impressions on question-style searches
- Ask new enquiries how they found you, and record AI assistants as a source

Questions
Do I need special markup to appear in Google's AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup. The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Decide bot by bot. Blocking training crawlers keeps your content out of future training data. Blocking search crawlers, such as OAI-SearchBot or Claude-SearchBot, can remove you from those assistants' search answers.
Is llms.txt worth doing?
It is cheap and harmless. It is also only a proposal with no official standing, and Google says you do not need AI text files. Do the basics first.
Can anyone guarantee I will be cited?
No. Nobody controls what an AI assistant cites. Anyone promising a guaranteed citation or ranking is selling something they cannot deliver.
