Practice 01

Portfolio strategy, innovation and growth

For family offices, corporate groups and boards with more than one business and nobody looking across them.

In short

HAM Agency is a portfolio strategy, innovation and growth practice. It reads everything an owner holds as one system, finds the value sitting between the businesses, and writes a single plan. Then it builds the brand, the route to market and the growth that make the plan real.

01

Who it's for

Owners and families with several operating businesses. Corporate groups whose divisions have grown apart. Family offices with a foundation or a fund alongside. Boards of owner-led groups. Institutions splitting one budget across several programmes.

And the single business that is worth a lot and has stopped moving, when nobody can say why.

02

The problems we fix

  • Nobody is reading the holdings together. Each business reports upward on its own terms, so there is no way to compare them or to see what one could do for another.
  • The plan is a set of ambitions. It names outcomes and no sequence, so every quarter it is reinterpreted.
  • Value sitting unused between the businesses. Shared buyers, shared routes to market, shared costs, none of it captured because nobody owns the space between.
  • A brand built away from the commercial plan. It looks right and it sells nothing.
  • A market entry attempted by the people already running something else. It gets the hours nobody had.
  • Something valuable that has stalled, with a long list of possible reasons and no diagnosis.
03

What we build

  • The portfolio read: every holding on the same terms, with what it is for, what it is worth and where it is stuck.
  • The one plan: where the money and the attention go, in what order, with the trade-offs named rather than avoided.
  • Positioning and brand for the group and for the businesses inside it.
  • Market entry: the route, the buyer, the proposition and the first conversations.
  • The growth engine: the channels, the funnel, the economics and the measurement, built before anything is spent.
  • The operating spine: one master list, the gates, the owners and the reporting that makes the plan survive the quarter.
04

How it runs

A scoping call, then a written scope with numbered deliverables, exclusions, two rounds of amends and a fixed price. Work starts when both sides have signed it.

The work runs gate to gate in short sprints against one master list. You see the view you need and nothing passes a gate without a go. Decisions and instructions are written down, never left in a messaging app.

Every number we hand you carries a grade and a source. Where the evidence is not there, we say so and name the test.

Questions

What does a portfolio strategy actually cover?

Every holding read on the same terms, so they can be compared: what each one is for, what it is worth, where it is stuck, what it needs next and what it costs to get there. Then one plan that says where the attention and the money go, and in what order.

How is this different from hiring a consultancy for each business?

A consultancy engaged by one company optimises that company. Nobody is paid to notice that two of your holdings are buying the same thing twice, or that one is a route to market for another. One team across the group sees both.

We have good people in each business already. What do you add?

Good operators run their own thing well, which is the job. The gap is usually that no one has the remit or the time to read across all of them. We hold the whole picture and hand each operator the part that is theirs.

Do you take over the running of a business?

No. We build the plan and the engine behind it, and we stay on while it starts working. Your people run it. If a business needs a permanent executive, we will say so rather than become one by accident.

Does this include brand and marketing?

Yes. Positioning, brand, campaigns, content, market entry and growth sit inside this practice as capabilities rather than as separate purchases, because a brand built away from the commercial plan tends not to survive contact with it.

How is portfolio work priced?

As a project, against named deliverables, quoted in writing before anything starts. We do not sell days or time and materials.

Cases, tools and answers

  1. We reviewed a family office's holdings as a single portfolio and proposed one role to manage what sits between them.

  2. We prepared a sports events business to raise investment and built the data room behind it.

  3. We took two founders from an idea to a first-market plan, a tiered offer and a 14-day test with the pass marks agreed before it started.

  4. We ran growth, brand and teaching inside a venture-backed online MBA, and mentored its founders.

  5. We turned a producer's export price list into the numbers a grocery buyer reads, and mapped the routes into retail.

  6. Earlier work: brand, digital, film, commerce and early AI for agencies, brands and founders.

  1. A one-page business plan in nine boxes, with plain-English prompts for each box and a test plan for your riskiest assumption. Adapted from Ash Maurya's Lean Canvas.

  2. Everything a UK food, drink or consumer goods brand needs before a supermarket buyer meeting: legal, labels, barcodes, certification, margin, supply, the buyer pack and your rights.

  1. What do UK food and drink brands need to export to the UAE and the US?

  2. What is the difference between a fractional CGO and a fractional CMO?

  3. What should a go-to-market strategy include?

  4. How do you get a product into UK supermarkets?

  5. How does a business show up in AI answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google?

  6. What should a seed-stage data room contain in the UK?

  7. What is a fractional chief growth officer?

  8. How can a hospitality business take orders through WhatsApp?
